Is motorcycle insurance required in the State of Florida?

Yes, in fact all states require motorists to carry insurance but the amount of coverage can vary by state. Florida requirements can be confusing because the “No-Fault” rule in Florida does not apply to motorcyclists which requires vehicle drivers to carry Personal Injury Protection (PIP) insurance. Florida requires motorcyclists to fulfill The Financial Responsibility Law for insurance coverage. The minimum requirement for motorcycle insurance in the State of Florida is as follows:

  • $10,000 for 1 person in bodily injury liability
  • $20,000 for 2 or more people in bodily injury liability
  • $10,000 per crash in property damage liability

 

Other insurance coverage types are optional but can be very beneficial, including uninsured motorist coverage.

Does my motorcycle insurance cover my passenger?

This can vary well depend on the actual coverage that you have. Most minimum coverage levels do not extend to passengers. If you plan to ride frequently with a rider, be sure to notify us when selecting coverage so we can make sure you and your rider are fully covered while on the road.

I have after-market parts on my bike, are they covered if damaged in an accident? What about my helmet or jacket?

This, too, can depend on your coverage levels. Some policies include coverage for damaged or stolen safety apparel (such as helmets. Jackets, gloves, etc.) for no additional cost.

Does motorcycle insurance cover theft?

Depending on your coverage, theft protection can be included. The bare minimum state requirement is unlikely to protect you in the event of a theft. Theft protection is usually a part of comprehensive insurance coverage. If you waive this insurance, the loss of the stolen bike may be burdened to you.

Does motorcycle insurance cover damage if it results from use on a track day?

Select carriers offer additional coverage to protect your bike while in use on track days, it is not part of the minimum standard of coverage. It is important to note that this type of coverage can vary from carrier to carrier and if it is a type of coverage you are interested in, we will be happy to review all possible options with you.

How much insurance or what kind of insurance do I need then?

Just like with car insurance, you can get the minimum requirements that is mandated by the state or you can opt for additional coverage. Insurance is about “what if” scenarios; what if you got into in accident? What if you were injured in said accident? Injured someone else? You have to consider many things to see how much insurance will suit your needs best. What discounts are available for motorcycle insurance?

Some available discounts that may be available are bundling discounts, such as combined home, vehicle, and motorcycle insurance through the same carrier. If you have completed a safety driving course or have a clear driving record, this may be considered for a discount on your monthly premium.
